Dear Parents,
Please join us for our Virtual Assembly! This week we have a very packed agenda! I didn't even have time to add my intros to each of the performances! So here is what I would have said:
"We begin with the song Fronteras. Maestra Sandoval’s class was asked to send a video of themselves doing their favorite activity, to match the lyrics of the song Frontera (Borders, in English). The words are beautiful in Spanish and in English they translate just as beautifully: "Hope is with us, with it nothing can stop us I go, holding your hand you go, holding mine, there is nothing to fear."
This song is followed by the Castro Family, watch Zoe, Galilea and Abuelita Castro, share with you a traditional folkoric song: Cielito Lindo.
Maestra Marin and her puppet Pedro follow with a presentaiton on Dia de Los Muertos. In the presentation you will also receive a bilingual lesson, so please play close attention and practice along: see how many words you can learn.
Next, we have a lesson celebrating baseball stars from the Dominican Republic. First grader Foster Batista, shares interesing stats and great baseball facts!
We follow with an art appreciation lesson delivered by two fourth graders, Olivia Mendoza and Lucia Mancera Rodriguez . They present a lesson on Frida Kahlo, first in Spanish and then in English. If you don’t speak Spanish, see if you can pick up some words that might sound like the English word, these are called cognates. You’ll hear how much money she made on the sale of her paintings; you’ll hear she was in 'un accidente' which means an accident.; but what other words can you figure out?
After the lesson is given in Spanish it will also be delivered in English. We end our assembly with a song from Maestra Howard’s class. They are signing Resistre.
Please enjoy the assembly and have a great week and weekend!
Sincerely,
Dr. Narro
Join us as we continue to celebrate Spanish Heritage Month with more history, dancing, instrumentals, singing and cooking by our students and staff.
* During the presentaiton of the drum lesson have your child practice keeping the beat either through clapping or by tapping on a table.
* When Maestra Sandoval's students sing, have your child sing along. Follow this link to find the English and Spanish lyrics here: https://www.soniadelossantosmusic.com/alegria
* While watching the cooking demonstration have your child take out a piece of paper and pencil to write down the recipe for guacamole and/or mollettes. If you try any of the recipes, please send pictures so we can feature your child in the newsletter!
Dear MHS Families,
Happy Friday!!
Please join us for today's assembly as we begin our 4 week celebration of Native American Heritage Month!
Wishing you a peace-filled day,
Laurie Narro
Dear MHS Families,
Attached, please find our Virtual Assembly for the week. We had a lot of wonderful contributions to celebrate Halloween, so we ran a little longer than we usually do, the video was a little over 26 minutes. So, you might want to start the video a little early; or if you have a little one, you might want to stop the video after the Halloween Celebration and watch the wonderful legend told by Jacque Tahuka Nunez at another time (it's a great story about accepting differences and it is not to be missed!)
Enjoy!
Laurie Narro
Dear MHS Famiilies,
This week's assembly begins with the pledge, a quote, a couple of jokes, two renditions of the National Anthem, PTA announcement and Speedy with some birthday wishes. We then conintue with our celebration of Hispanic Heritage month! We have a number of presentations and encourage your child's intereaction, so why not try the following:
Maestra Marin's kindergarteners will be teaching some Spanish prhases, why not practice these all weekend long?
While watching the cooking demonstration have your child take out a piece of paper and pencil to write down the recipe for the Paletas de Fruta (fruit popsicles). Make them this week and let us know if you tried any variations.
There a couple of poems that are recited. I am attaching the Spanish and English versions. Perhaps you can reread these and disucss their meaning, they are beautiful and inspiring.
