this is South Pasadena Unified School District's safety drills presentation for students in fourth and fifth grade at ayoyo Vista Morango and Monterey Hills today we are going to talk about why we have safety drills we will discuss why it is important to listen how you will react during an emergency what to do if there is a fire what to do if there is an earthquake what to do if there is a soft lock out what to do if there is a hard lock down and what to do if you are not with your teacher why do we have safety drills your principals teachers and School staff want to make sure that your school is safe healthy and ready if an emergency situation were to occur what type of safety drills do we practice at school we practice 4 different types of drills we practice earthquake drills like the great shake out in October we practice fire drills we also practice soft lockout and hard lock down drills how I react during a drill you may feel many different things you may feel nervous you may feel your heart beating really fast you may feel scared zoned out or unable to focus all these feelings are okay how can I calm down there are many ways to calm yourself down you can breathe slowly count to 10 or close your eyes for a moment can you think of other ways to calm down why is it important to listen to directions we should always listen to the adult in charge so we know what to do we know where to go and we understand the instructions so we can stay safe we practice these drills throughout the school year the more we practice the more calm we will be the more likely we will automatically know what to do and the more likely we will be safe we do not want to Panic or run without instructions we also do not want to pretend like nothing is happening it is important to stay calm and focused and to listen to directions carefully what if there is a fire if there is a fire the fire alarm will ring listen to your teacher your teacher will give you instructions on what to do next remember to always stay calm follow your teacher your teacher will take you to a safe place and leave your belongings behind what if there is an earthquake if you are inside a building take cover under a desk if you are outside move away from buildings remember to drop cover and hold on listen to your teacher your teacher will give you instructions on what to do next remember to always stay calm follow your teacher your teacher will take you to a safe place and remember to leave your belongings behind what if there's a soft lockout a soft lockout is a Potential Threat or police activity on or off school grounds you will hear an announcement over the loudspeaker or from a school adult please listen to the school adult stay calm and continue learning in a soft lockout depending on the situation you may move about the campus if you are outside during a soft lockout walk directly to your classroom what if there's a hard lockdown a hard lock lockdown is a life-threatening situation or event on or off school grounds you will hear an announcement over the loudspeaker or from a school adult please listen to the school adult remember to stay calm and quiet when there is a hard lockdown locked the door cover the windows and turn off the lights the school adult may ask you to sit or lie on the floor and remain silent remain in place until you receive an all-clear signal what if there is an intruder once the door is locked do not open the door the police in South Pasadena District administrators will be the only adults that are able to open the doors when you are instructed to leave the room display empty hands and open Palms understand that the police officers first priority is to make sure the environment is safe the police officers will not be interacting with students once the scene is secured the responders will work with the school officials what if I'm not with my teacher remember to always stay calm follow a school adults or police officers instructions if you are alone remain in a safe place until they schooled adult or police officer comes if you are in the bathroom stay in the bathroom if you are outside without an adult go to the nearest safe place if there's an intruder on campus you may have to leave school if it is safe to do so and if your teacher or a school adult tells you to if you are told to leave school leave behind your personal belongings help others if you can but go even if there are others who do not follow and run until you are in a safe hiding place let's review some of what we've learned today there are 4 types of safety drills earthquake fire soft lockout and hard lockdown during a drill and during a real emergency you should always stop look and listen and always do your best to stay calm students if you have any questions please ask your teacher teachers if you are unsure how to answer a question please for the question to your school administrators thank you
