good morning images family I hope you had a great first week of school and you were able to make it to our back-to-school which night today we will have our regular assembling Pledge song an heart I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America into the Republic for which it stands I would like to begin by acknowledging and paying tribute to the original inhabitants of want to take a few minutes to share with you amazing resilient people who would have or did benefit from the tremendously important Ada law Helen Keller Helen had an illness before the age of 2 which left her blind and deaf even at age 6 she did not speak or and anything until a courageous teacher came to live with Helen Stanley just one month after arriving to work with Helen and Sullivan only 20 years old herself and suffering from serious Vision issues to changed Helen's life Helen went on to become an author political activists and lecture she was the first blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree you may know Helen from the famous movie The Miracle Worker or from the book she wrote The Story of My Life Frida Kahlo Frida was a famous artist who suffered from polio and an accident in her childhood that left her with physical issues All For Life you spent much of her life in bed suffering from severe pain that didn't stop her from becoming one of the most famous artists of all time and an icon of the 20th century Stephen Hawking he was a theoretical physicist and astrophysicist a cosmologist and an eminent scientist he was diagnosed with ALS at 8 21 and given 2 years to live he was paralyzed from head to toe for over 30 years although doctors expected him to die around the age of 23 he lived 53 more years and contributed a tremendous amount to science and if you love science or you saw the movie of his life The Theory of Everything or read his very famous book A Brief History of Time these three individuals are among so many who is not let their house challenges stop them from doing great things they are true examples of resiliency resilience means the ability bounce back despite big sometimes huge challenges these three individuals as well as many many others can be our models of resiliency and they can give us Frank and desire to be resilient ourselves we can learn from them and be resilient despite the many Chow changes in our world today and in our own bodies or in our families be resilient students practice it you two will be the best version of yourself until next week 3 years ago something really important was fought for and it was finally achieved it was called the American I bet you might not know much about it but it is something that has changed the lives of many and went a long way in helping people what's a question for you have you ever had to walk around when it was so dark that you couldn't see a thing have you ever use headphones and will you weren't able to hear anyone in the house who might have tried to speak to you broken your leg and couldn't walk or broken your arm and couldn't write What would life be like if you were not able to see or hear or walk or right ever have some more questions for you when we are at school how do you know it's time for recess the sound of the belt right or the clock and if you were at school and you had to use stairs but you wheelchair how would you move around the school have you ever noticed that there many ramps at school have you noticed that our fire alarm has both sound and lights have you noticed that there is parking space so that if someone has a hard time getting around they can be close to the front of the office and have you ever noticed that when you come to the corner of a street curb that it has a so that wheelchairs can roll up all the support have been put in place because of the American Disability Act many may be familiar to you some like they knew these signatures how to make need a different form of support that there is something offered a place for someone in a wheelchair to park a phone that has a greater sound a path is clear and safe enough for someone who is not cited to use braille for those who cannot read with her eyes and for those who cannot hear closed captioning where words appear on TV screen sign language and the Bluetooth hookup for hearing aids so you might ask yourself how did they support start to happen or things weren't changing or at least they were changing very slowly so many people who had extra needs and those who care for them try to get the lawmakers introduce changes that also move things very slowly so protest again to bring about change it peaceful protest the protests were to ensure things would get changed to might have a disability the protests were modeled after the Civil Rights protests of the 1960s here you see a group under the sign that was a quote from Martin Luther King Jr Injustice anywhere is a threat to Justice everywhere these marches and in the 1970s after the Civil Rights Act of 1968 that the changes to support those who had a disability took a long time to happen slowly started to get past like the 1972 Rehabilitation Act still has much more work to be done people continue to try and get laws passed by working with the legislature and by continuing to protest in 1990 a very huge protest took place the citizens those with disabilities and those who cared for them wanted to be heard how could they when they couldn't even get into the bill speak to those who could make laws different this is a very famous picture of what was called the disability crawl there were no ramps and steps to the Capitol in Washington DC that would have stopped the citizens people got out of their Wheelchairs and crawled up the stairs so they could enter the building and continue to make the case for new laws to be put into place and so finally in 1990 the American Disability Act was passed it was the law that made the most changes and disability rights legislation it required that all government and programs the accessible it required that businesses with more than 15 employees make reasonable accommodations for disabled workers and that public accommodations such as restaurants and stores make reasonable modifications to ensure access for disabled members of the public that is why we celebrate this anniversary it made the lives of many individuals better in allowed for more equal and fair treatment and that students is worth celebrating listen to Shawnee school psychologist introduced a video and it is in celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Americans Ada is a loss when I saw that was enacted to prohibit the Discrimination of people based on their disabilities handicap International and UNICEF and it's
