Our School Counselor, Mrs. Marina Thompson, serves as the counselor at both AV and MHS, working two and a half days at each school site. She provides support to our students in a number of ways.
During the first few weeks of school, she meets with parent, teacher and administrator to review any student 504 Plans.
As the year begins, she hosts a new student lunch in order to welcome and introduce our new Roadrunners to others. This allows our new students a chance to make new friends. Mrs. Thompson becomes another friendly face on campus.
She coordinates our Student Success Team (SST) meetings at which time, teacher, parents, administrator and counselor come together to develop a plan of intervention for students who need additional educational, social, emotional and behavioral support.
Mrs. Thompson works in the classroom with students supporting teachers with the Second Step curriculum; classroom yoga, and mindfulness. She also meets with students who may be in need of some counseling on a short-term basis and provides families with a list of resources available in the community for those students in need of longer term support.
The links below give additional details about supports for students who may be in need. The 504 plan document discusses qualifying criteria. The SST document provides additional information regarding this structure of support.
NED's Kindness Adventure
A few months ago we welcomed NED’s Kindness Adventure to our school for an assembly about NED’s exciting and cultural adventure to Kenya. Our school was entered into a random drawing. The prize was the opportunity to ask 5 questions of the Bidii Primary students in Nairobi Kenya, the same students we met during the assembly!
