Dear Monterey Hills Elementary Families,

Welcome to the 2026–2027 school year! We are excited to welcome our Roadrunners back to campus on Wednesday, August 12. Whether your family is returning or joining us for the first time, we are thrilled to begin another wonderful year of learning, growth, and connection together.

My name is Julia Johnson, and I am honored to serve as the new principal of Monterey Hills Elementary. South Pasadena has always held a special place in my heart, as it is where I began my teaching career and spent the majority of my educational journey. It is truly a privilege to partner with our outstanding students, dedicated staff, and supportive families.

Our schoolwide theme this year is "The Journey Ahead: Honoring Our Roots. Climbing Toward Tomorrow". Every student is on a journey, every teacher helps guide the climb, every family is an important part of the path, and together we will continue building on the nearly 60-year tradition of excellence that makes Monterey Hills such a special place.

Before school begins, please join us for two special events:

• Thursday, August 6 | 5:30–6:30 p.m. – New Family Orientation*New Families Only
• Friday, August 7 | 5:00–7:00 p.m. – TK/Kindergarten Popsicle Party

A huge shout out and thank you to our amazing custodial team, office staff, and teachers, who have been working behind the scenes to prepare our campus and classrooms for a fantastic year. We are also incredibly grateful for our Monterey Hills PTA, led by Mallory Buril and Argelia Garcia, and for the continued support of our SPUSD Board of Education and district leadership.

Please take a few moments to read this Back-to-School Edition, which includes important information to help your family prepare for a successful start to the school year.
