Dear MHS Famiilies,

This week's assembly begins with the pledge, a quote, a couple of jokes, two renditions of the National Anthem, PTA announcement and Speedy with some birthday wishes. We then conintue with our celebration of Hispanic Heritage month! We have a number of presentations and encourage your child's intereaction, so why not try the following:

Maestra Marin's kindergarteners will be teaching some Spanish prhases, why not practice these all weekend long?
While watching the cooking demonstration have your child take out a piece of paper and pencil to write down the recipe for the Paletas de Fruta (fruit popsicles). Make them this week and let us know if you tried any variations.
There a couple of poems that are recited. I am attaching the Spanish and English versions. Perhaps you can reread these and disucss their meaning, they are beautiful and inspiring.
Here is the link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2r7zsSFEmQ&feature=emb_logo

Have a great weekend!

It runs a little long as we celebrate both Lunar New Year and Black History Month---and we had a couple of announcements.

There was also a bit of a problem with the audio on some of the students we recorded. These are the kids who share about the gift bags that the PTA was so generous to donate. Here is their script (in case you can't raise the volume)

Parker:
Ni Hao--
“xin nian hao”
The MHS PTA would like to wish everyone a hopeful and prosperous Year of the Tiger. With the generous contributions from our community we have some gifts for you.

Aiven
You will receive mandarins or tangerines which are fruit that appears every year during Lunar New Year. The Chinese word for mandarins -- gam or gum -- sounds just like gold, so this fruit is thought to represent fullness, good wealth, and fortune.

August
You will also receive lai che or a red envelope that has a ginger candy. Ginger is considered a very healthy food that will bring about a long life

Adeline
Everything we are giving out has to be given in pairs (two ginger candies and two fruit) to symbolize "togetherness," which is a very important value in Asian and all cultures including the culture here at MHS.

Everyone

<itunes:summary>It runs a little long as we celebrate both Lunar New Year and Black History Month---and we had a couple of announcements.

There was also a bit of a problem with the audio on some of the students we recorded. These are the kids who share about the gift bags that the PTA was so generous to donate. Here is their script (in case you can't raise the volume)

And, I was lucky to end it watching the finished product of our assembly. I love curating the assembly, and once Mr. Lopez puts it together and I get to see it in its finished product, I can't help but keep a huge smile on my face. Dear MHS Families

Please join us for the first Friday assembly of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. We have created two assemblies in the hope that each would meet the instructional needs of our students. Half of both assemblies include: my greeting; pledge and jokes/riddles led by Student Council; a PTA Annoucement and a presentation by Mrs. Tull's and Mrs. Owen's classes. We follow this with two different clips, one featuring children's favorite foods and the other a student chef and photographer! Then the primary and upper grade videos offer different learning opportunites. For our primary grade students, they will get an opportunity to learn more about the Asian continent. For our upper grade students, they too get a chance to learn about the 43 countries that make up Asia and they also get a chance to hear from Asians who have felt the impact of racial stereotypes. Our assemblies this month will continue to provide an opportuntity for visibility, inclusivity and equity.

I do encourage all of our students who might be able to share informaton about the Asian culture, whether it be in art form, through food or language, familiy tradition and celebrations, to submit videos for the next three weeks so they might be featured in our assemblies.

thanks,

Dr. Narro

I do encourage all of our students who might be able to share informaton about the Asian culture, whether it be in art form, through food or language, familiy tradition and celebrations, to submit videos for the next three weeks so they might be featured in our assemblies.

thanks,

Dr. Narro

Dear Parents,

Please join us for our Virtual Assembly! This week we have a very packed agenda! I didn't even have time to add my intros to each of the performances! So here is what I would have said:

"We begin with the song Fronteras. Maestra Sandoval’s class was asked to send a video of themselves doing their favorite activity, to match the lyrics of the song Frontera (Borders, in English). The words are beautiful in Spanish and in English they translate just as beautifully: "Hope is with us, with it nothing can stop us I go, holding your hand you go, holding mine, there is nothing to fear."

This song is followed by the Castro Family, watch Zoe, Galilea and Abuelita Castro, share with you a traditional folkoric song: Cielito Lindo.

Maestra Marin and her puppet Pedro follow with a presentaiton on Dia de Los Muertos. In the presentation you will also receive a bilingual lesson, so please play close attention and practice along: see how many words you can learn.

Next, we have a lesson celebrating baseball stars from the Dominican Republic. First grader Foster Batista, shares interesing stats and great baseball facts!

We follow with an art appreciation lesson delivered by two fourth graders, Olivia Mendoza and Lucia Mancera Rodriguez . They present a lesson on Frida Kahlo, first in Spanish and then in English. If you don’t speak Spanish, see if you can pick up some words that might sound like the English word, these are called cognates. You’ll hear how much money she made on the sale of her paintings; you’ll hear she was in 'un accidente' which means an accident.; but what other words can you figure out?

After the lesson is given in Spanish it will also be delivered in English. We end our assembly with a song from Maestra Howard’s class. They are signing Resistre.

Please enjoy the assembly and have a great week and weekend!

Sincerely,

Dr. Narro

Join us for our 45th Video Assembly of the year!!!

It is the final one (for this year) and includes recogntion of our school retirees; staff members who have received recognition for their years of service; a thank you to our PTA; Ms. Blum's announcement of the CYRM book selection; Ms. Thackery's reveal of who won the mineral raffle and the great contribution MHS made with the proceeds; Ms. Diggs compilation videos of our students in their music class; and Maestra Salas closes out the video with a great song and dance from her class!

We ran a little long...but that is how school is, so much to celebrate! Please enjoy!

Dear MHS Families,

Is everyone excited???? I know the MHS Staff is ready to go! We have waited an entire year to say hello in person to our 3-5th grade students and the time is finally here! Those third graders who's families opted for hybrid instruction, will be back this Thursday, March 11 and our 4-5th graders on Monday, March 15.

I have a couple of resources that will hopefully answer any questions your child or you might have about our return. I had to update our reopening playbook (one last time) and so I am again attaching it to this note, below.

With the help of Lauren Child and Hector Batista, we also updated our Tk-2nd grade video to include entrance gates for upper grades and I even got a peacock to pose for me! I have attached that here as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iijUNA74YF8

So looking forward to the students return!

Dear MHS Families,

Attached, please find our Virtual Assembly for the week. We had a lot of wonderful contributions to celebrate Halloween, so we ran a little longer than we usually do, the video was a little over 26 minutes. So, you might want to start the video a little early; or if you have a little one, you might want to stop the video after the Halloween Celebration and watch the wonderful legend told by Jacque Tahuka Nunez at another time (it's a great story about accepting differences and it is not to be missed!)

Enjoy!

Dear MHS Families,

Attached please find our virtual assembly. This and next week we are celebrating PRIDE month. In our assembly you will find:

-a discussion with student council members on the definition of an ally and what a person can do in this role
-a reading from Mr. Hall of the book Sparkle Boy. This is a story in which a younger boy really likes sparkly things. His sister gets to wear a sparkly skirt, nail polish and bracelets and he wants to wear these items, as well. His sister objects, even though his parents and grandmother are in support. When the boy is teased at school, his sister comes to his defense as an ally and ultimately accepts the choices he has made.

Our hope with all our assemblies this school year has been to acknowledge diversity; promote allyship; and encourage inclusivity. We believe this video meets these goals.

Thanks,
Dr. Narro

A message from MONTEREY HILLS SCHOOL

Dear MHS Families,

Over the next two weeks (November 9 - November 20) you’ll be participating in our very first MHS Virtual Parent-Teacher Conference. This is an opportunity to discover how your child is progressing so far this year and what her/his/their goals are for the next trimester. Please come prepared to share your child’s experience in distance learning; any questions you might have; and any concerns that have arisen about your child’s progress. If you haven’t signed up for your conference, please look for an email from your child’s teacher which will contain directions on how to sign-up for a conference time that works best for you.

On Monday, November 9 at 9:00AM you’ll have access to your child's 1st trimester report card via the Aeries Portal. Please click on the "Grades" tab and then on "Standards Based Report Cards." You will be able to access the current report card for review and printing.

South Pasadena’s Elementary Progress Report is standards-based.  The purpose of this report is to inform parents/guardians about her/his/their child’s progress towards achieving South Pasadena Unified School District standards and to guide growth. SPUSD standards are the California Content Standards, including the CCSS for ELA and Mathematics. The students in 1st - 5th grade are scored on a four-point rubric, TK and K are scored on a three-point rubric.

A standards-based report card assesses a student’s performance on the content (academic) standards within the student’s particular grade level.  Therefore, each grade level progress report contains different standards.  Please know that many of the standards are taught throughout the year so it’s not unusual for a student to receive a ‘2’ during the first trimester. You can find more information on grade level standards on the South Pasadena Unified School District website: Grade Level Standards. If you scroll down the page, you will find a great resource: Parent’s Guide to Student Success Published by National PTA, clear, concise and tips included!!

This process, of assigning grades during a pandemic, has certainly been complex. Some grade levels asked that I share additional information on how they came to complete the report cards. (You will receive this in a separate email.) Dear MHS Families,

(You will receive this in a separate email.) You will note that there is a statement on every report card under comments: Trimester 1's grades reflect achievement and effort during distance learning.
Dear Parents,

This week's assembly is a tribute to the great civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. After our pledge and announcements, we begin the celebration. We start with the protest song "We Shall Overcome," follow it with the words from the speech "I Have a Dream" and then move into some interpretaions of MLK's speech and implications of some of the quotes attributed to Dr. King. We end with Stevie Wonder singing Happy Birthday! (What would a birthday tribute be without singing happy birthday? )

As every good party goes...this assembly is a little long, even though there was so much we left out! If you are viewing this assembly with your children, you might stop at Stevie Wonder (which is 23 minutes in) or you might just want to do the sing-a-long. Danciing is also encouraged. Please take pictures!!

The making and editing of this assembly was thought provoking, inspired soul searching, and brought about big emotional responses. You'll hear it in the teachers' and students' voices. It is hard to think of the work and words of MLK from over 55 years ago without being stirred by their relevance today. This was not lost on our students. Our 5th grade students offered sophisticated and mature responses as they linked words of protest from the 60s to protests of the day.

if you are a parent of a little one, I want to be sensitive to their viewing. As stated already, the video is a little longer than usual. If you choose, you might stop after the viewing of Ms. Zelenski's students work and I would suggest a video by Kid President https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0mSOAA7hHE&t=15si

Monday is a National Holiday and a day set for volunteering. I encourage you to make a plan with your children and ask them what they would like to do to make a better home; community; and world! I bet you will be surprised about how thoughtful their responses are bound to be!

The video was a little long so if your child watches before they join their class, you might want to have them begin the video at 8:20 instead of 8:30.

I also suggest that your child have a square piece of paper so they can follow along with the origami lesson.
