Events & Programs 2016-2017

The activities listed below are only possible because of you! Volunteers are needed in and out of the classroom.

Please get involved and try to help for a minimum of 1 event or program each school year.

Back-to-School / Wish Night 

Wednesday, August 25, 2016

6:00pm – 7:30pm

A parents-only, evening event at which the school and classroom objectives are presented. MHS PTA provides a reception with light refreshments and presents its goals for funding enrichment programs for students. This is MHS PTA’s largest fundraiser each year.

Community Discount Cards

Fall 2016

A local business discount card that offers savings throughout the year. A portion of initial sales provides revenue for PTA.

Welcome Back Family Picnic

5:30pm – 7:30pm

School-wide event that brings MHS families together at school to celebrate the start of the school year with DJ music entertainment. Families may bring their own picnic or purchase pre-ordered pre-paid meals.

Friday, October 7, 2016

Students participate in a National PTA program to encourage involvement in the arts by submitting an original piece, inspired by the annual theme "What is Your Story?” in any of the following arts areas: dance, film production, literature, music composition, photography, & visual arts. The Chairperson will forward the student’s artistic submissions for the State and National PTA Reflections awards.

Red Ribbon Week 

October 24-28, 2016

Students and families participate in a nationwide campaign to help keep communities safe and healthy, with emphasis on making good choices. A committee of volunteers organize daily theme activities, decorate campus with red ribbons, copy flyers, distribute favors and assist with daily lunchtime activities for students.

Halloween Parade

Friday, October 28, 2016

A family event held on the main playground after school on Halloween Day, in conjunction with the MHS Cub Scout carnival. Everyone is encouraged to dress in their favorite costumes for the parade. Volunteers assist the chairperson with coordinating the event and helping the day of the event.

Scrip (gift cards)

November 2016

A fundraiser in which scrip (gift cards) are pre-sold to parents and staff with a percentage of sales (typically 4-15%) returned as revenue for the MHS PTA. Volunteers help print/distribute order forms, place orders, and distribute gift cards.

Piano Recital

Friday, November 18, 2016

An evening event for students to showcase their piano playing talents.  Volunteers assist the Chair with publicity, paperwork and scheduling of participants.

Book Fair

November 28, 2016 – December 2, 2016

Books are displayed and are available for purchase in the MPR during the fall Parent-Teacher Conference Week. Early dismissal schedule for students in grades 1-5. Volunteers help set up, clean up and work the book fair sales in shifts throughout the week. All proceeds benefit MHS school library.

Winter Program

Monday, December 19 (3rd-5th)

Tuesday, December 20 (TK-2nd)

A pianist works with each grade level to learn songs for the Winter Program. The students performs twice at 8:30am and at 10:00am on their scheduled grade level performance day.

A videographer is needed to record the performances.

Jog-a-thon

Friday, January 13, 2017

Students get involved and run laps as a fundraiser. Volunteers needed to help photocopy flyers, collect pledges, and then help track number of laps and set up/clean up on event day.

Science Fair

Students display their science experiments and projects. Special speakers or assemblies are scheduled. Volunteers help photocopy/distribute flyers, sell and distribute display boards, help set up and clean up on the day and evening of Science Fair.

Family Dinner Dance

Students and their families enjoy an evening together, socializing with friends, enjoying sit-down service dinner, photo booth, and dancing to music.

Talent Show 

Friday, February 24, 2017

An evening event for students to showcase their creative talents.  Volunteers assist the Chair with publicity, paperwork and scheduling of the talent show participants.

Read-a-thon

March 2017

A fundraiser in which students collect pledges for number of minutes or number of books they read. Volunteers help with publicity, forms, prizes, collecting pledges, and help with any special events (Book Swap, Family Literacy Night, etc).

Community Read-In

Friday, March 3, 2017

Following Read-Across-America Day and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday, community members including parent volunteers are invited to read a book to a class.

Young Author’s Week

March 20-24, 2017

Authors are invited to visit and have discussions with students. Volunteers may assist the Chair with copying fliers and coordinating the sales of author’s books during the week.

Pajama Story Night

Thursday, March 23, 2017

An evening event where MHS librarian Ms. Blum coordinates with teachers/staff to bring stories to life. Volunteers help with copying fliers & gather props and materials for costumes.

Sports Field Day

Friday, March 31, 2017

Students work in teams to physically maneuver through various obstacles and activity stations. Volunteers staff the stations, distribute snacks/water, set up and clean up.

Teacher Appreciation Week

April 24-28, 2017

Students and parents recognize the important work teachers do and express their gratitude to teachers and staff by providing a special daily breakfast and a lunch party. Volunteers needed to donate food, beverages and homemade dishes, help set up/clean up; assist Chair in publicity and execution of special activities for students to do for teachers each day.

All City Track Meet

Friday, April 28, 2017

South Pasadena elementary schools compete in a track and field event held at the high school.  Volunteers help with practices earlier in the week, races, set up and clean up.

Screen Free Week

May 1-5, 2017

Students are encouraged to participate in the national campaign to turn off screens and "turn on life." Prizes awarded to students who completes a whole week of no screen entertainment. Volunteers help with copying fliers, pick up and distribute prizes.

Book Swap

May 1-5, 2017

In conjunction with Screen Free Week, students bring gently used books for tickets, which will then be exchanged for other gently used books.

Honorary Service Awards

An award program that recognizes the contributions to MHS by volunteers, community members, or organizations. A committee reviews nominations and selects award recipients.

Art Docent

throughout the year

Students participate in unique art projects outside of the normal curriculum. Volunteers help organize and execute school-wide art projects.

BoxTops

throughout the year

Families collect BoxTops labels from grocery items to raise money for MHS towards playground equipment.  Volunteers assist Chair with collection and counting of BoxTops.

Cultural Arts Assemblies

throughout the year

PTA-sponsored assemblies for all students and teachers. Performers showcase various art mediums and cultural traditions.

Dining-Out / Shopping

throughout the year

Families can support local businesses or restaurants on specific MHS days, or shop online through the MHS web site, for a percentage of profits that goes back to the school.  Volunteers needed to help Chair coordinate and promote fundraising opportunities.

E-scrip

throughout the year

Families register shopping club cards and/or store credit cards so a percentage of purchases are given to MHS PTA. www.escrip.com

Character Counts

throughout the year

Students learn about the “Six Pillars of Character.” Volunteer assist Chair with the execution of the program throughout the school year.

Emergency Preparedness

throughout the year

Supplies are provided on campus for emergency situations. Supply needs and purchases are coordinated between SPUSD, MHS staff, and MHS PTA.

Family Fun Nights

throughout the year

School-wide events that bring MHS families together at the school.  Volunteers help staff special evening events to build community spirit.

Green Committee / Recycling

throughout the year

Students learn the importance of protecting the earth and our environment.  Volunteers help support recycling and green education efforts at MHS.

Wellness Committee

throughout the year

A committee of staff and parents who aim to educate students and families about good nutrition, health and fitness, and encourage healthy celebrations at home and at school.

Laminating

Parent volunteers are trained to use the laminator and laminate papers for teachers.

Language Ambassador

throughout the year

Bilingual parent volunteers help families in other languages.

Membership

throughout the year

Parents, students, family members, and other community members can join and support the PTA by becoming members for only $7 annual fee.

MHS PTA Legislative Representative

A volunteer representative updates PTA members with latest legislative news regarding children and education.

Safety Valet

throughout the year

Open car doors and escort children from the drive-thru drop-off/pick-up.

Spirit Wear

throughout the year

MHS t-shirts, mugs, bags etc. are available for purchase.  Students, staff and parents are encouraged to wear their MHS spirit wear on Fridays. Volunteers needed to help with the sale of MHS spirit items at various school functions.
