 2009-2010 PTA Events and Programs
MHS PTA needs your volunteering help to support all these programs provided for MHS students.

Our goal is to have 100% participation from all our families.

Please get involved and try to help for a minimum of 1 event this year....our children need you!

Name Volunteer Duties
Back-to-School & Wish Night
Sept. 24
A parents only event where the school and classroom objectives are presented. Volunteers needed to help print, distribute materials and set up/clean up refreshments for the evening of Back-to-School Night.
Gift Wrap Sales
Oct. 2 - Nov.
Gift-wrap, holiday items and gifts are sold via catalogs as a school-wide fundraiser. Volunteers needed to help with the distribution of the fundraising brochures, order reconciliation and distribution of items.
Sports Field Day
Oct. 16
Students work in teams to physically maneuver through various obstacles and activity stations. Volunteers needed to help staff the stations, snack distribution, set up and clean up.
Red Ribbon Week
Oct. 19-23
Students participate in a nationwide drug prevention program. Volunteers needed to assist Chair with the execution of Red Ribbon Week which includes decorating campus with red ribbons, distributing favors and copying fliers.
Reflections
Month of Oct.
A nationwide event where students can showcase their artistic talents. Volunteers needed to assist, coordinate and forward children's artistic submission for the National PTA Reflections contest.
Halloween Parade & Carnival
Oct. 30
Students celebrate by dressing up in costumes and going to a carnival. Volunteers needed to help with various game stations during carnival.
Book Fair
Nov. 30- Dec. 4
Books are displayed and are available for purchase. Volunteers needed to help set up, clean up and run the book fair throughout the week in shifts.
Holiday Craft Shoppe
Dec. 11
Students purchase and make holiday crafts for family and friends. Volunteers needed to help set up and clean up and man the various craft tables.
Jogathon
Jan. 8
Students get involved and run laps as a fundraiser. Volunteers needed to help photocopy flyers, distribute forms, track number of laps, collect and process money, help set up and clean up on the day of the Jogathon.
Authors Week
Month of Feb.
Authors are invited to visit and have discussions with students. Volunteers needed to assist Chair with copying fliers and coordinating the sales of author's books during Authors Week.
Talent Show
Feb. 19
An event where students can showcase their creative talents. Volunteers needed to assist Chair with publicity, various paperwork and scheduling of the talent show participants.
Science Fair
Mar. 11
Students display their Science experiments and projects. Volunteers needed to help photocopy flyers, distribute display boards, help set up and clean up on the day and evening of Science Fair.
All City Track
Apr. 16 or 23 (TBD)
South Pasadena elementary school track and field event held at the high school. Volunteers needed to help set up/clean up and manage practices and races.
Teacher Appreciation Week
May 3-7
Students and parents express their thankfulness and gratitude to teachers and staff by providing a special breakfast and/or luncheon. Volunteers needed to donate food and beverages and homemade dishes. Help set up and clean up. Assist Chair in publicity and execution of activities.
Fun Fair
May 15-16
A carnival organized by the three South Pasadena elementary schools. Volunteers needed to chair positions (ticket sales, raffles, confetti eggs, food, book nook . . .etc.) and various classroom sponsored booths.
Honorary Service Awards
June 4
An awards program where outstanding staff and parents are recognized. Volunteers needed to photocopy nominations, review nominations and select award recipients.
Art Docent

Students participate in unique art projects outside of the normal curriculum. Volunteers needed to learn how to make an art project and teach it to students or create your own art project using our own materials to teach a class. Help needed in facilitating lunch time art projects and school wide art docent project
BoxTops
yearlong
Families collect BoxTop labels from grocery items to raise money for school supplies. Volunteers needed to assist BoxTops Chair with collection and counting of BoxTops throughout the year.
Character Counts

Students learn about the "Six Pillars of Character". . .Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Volunteers needed to assist Chair with the execution of Character Counts program throughout the school year.
Earthquake Kits
Month of Sept.
Parents purchase Earthquake Kits for their child. Earthquake Kits are stored on-campus for emergency use. Volunteers needed to assist with distribution of emergency kits to various classrooms in the Fall.
Family Fun Nights
Sept. 4, Mar. 26, June 4,
School-wide events that bring MHS families together at the school. Volunteers needed to help organize special evening events to help build community spirit.
Green

Students learn the importance of protecting the earth and our environment. Volunteers needed to help support recycling and green education efforts at MHS.
Hospitality

Volunteers needed to ensure refreshments are available for monthly PTA meetings.
Membership
yearlong
Parents, relatives of students and other community members can support the PTA and become members for a $6 annual fee. Volunteers needed to assist Membership VP with membership campaign/drive throughout the year.
MHS Public Relations

Volunteers needed to help communicate MHS events and functions to local newspapers and other non-MHS audiences.
Monterey Hills Dine Out

Families can support local businesses on specific MHS days for a percentage of profits that go back to the school. Volunteers needed to help coordinate fundraising opportunities with local restaurants for "Monterey Hills Dine Out" .
School Directory
Fall
A school directory that is available to MHS families for private use only. Volunteers needed to help compile all directory information into an electronic file for distribution.
Silent Auction
Mar 26
Parents bid on various gift baskets and items at the Silent Auction fundraiser. Volunteers needed to procure auction items, help wrap items and manage bidding process.
Spirit Items
yearlong
MHS t-shirts, mugs, license plate frames etc. are available for purchase. Students, staff and parents are encouraged to wear their MHS shirts on Fridays. Volunteers needed to help with the sales of MHS spirit items at various school functions.
