A Message from our Principal... Joe Johnson
Greetings! Welcome to the new MHS web page! We hope that you will find it useful by providing the most current and useful information whenever you need it! The website along with the PTA monthly newsletter "The Roadrunner" will be our basic means of keeping in touch with our parent community. The staff and I are committed to providing the very best education possible for our students, and with increased information sharing, we aim to strengthen the staff-parent relationship. As more staff utilize the website, you will find individual teacher websites linked to this homepage over the next few months. For those in their first year Monterey Hills School, our mascot is the roadrunner and our school colors are green and yellow. We first opened in 1967, thereby making MHS the newest and smallest of the three elementary schools in the South Pasadena Unified School District. We have a diverse student population with an average enrollment of about 475 students. The majority of our staff averages 11 years of teaching experience within the District and 14 total years in the teaching profession. MHS houses three special education classes for the District. The students in our Special Day Classes are integrated with our general education students for many schoolwide activities, and are part of our general education program as outlined in a student's Individual Education Plan. Additionally, our site has a full time counselor/psychologist and Resource Program Specialist to support other students eligible for these services or programs. As a result of the 1995 Measure L Bond, all of our classrooms were modernized. Improvements include Internet access, a new telephone system, new carpeting, lighting, furniture and bulletin boards. In addition, three new permanent classrooms were constructed, along with a new Library Media Center, which houses both our library and computer lab programs. As our enrollment has increased, we have also seen the need to add a portable classroom. Our instructional program includes a 30-hour per week librarian and a 20-hour per week computer lab technician to better serve all student activities/projects. In addition, an electronic card catalogue and book check-out system has been installed, allowing students and staff information quickly and efficient access to educational materials. The MHS PTA over the years has provided major funding provisions for site improvements such as a new lunch pavilion, new playground equipment for the main and kindergarten playgrounds, and stage lighting and stage curtains for various schoolwide or classroom performances. Additionally, the PTA provides funding for our traffic control assistant who assists students with loading and unloading both before and after school.
Our Back to School Night is scheduled for Wednesday, September 20. At this time, parents are invited to meet with their child(ren)'s teacher(s) to learn more about the curriculum and instructional program designed for the year. Our PTA will hold their annual Wish Night on the same night. Please plan to meet in our Multipurpose Room at 6:30 to socialize and get an overview of our school and PTA's goals for the year.
We are glad to have you on board as parents and supporters of MHS, and look forward to a another rewarding year for student sand parents alike. Together we can make this one of our best years.
Best regards,
Joe Johnson
